What is the Interfaith Council?

  • The Interfaith Council (IC) of Iowa State University is a student umbrella organization that represents diverse spiritual perspectives.
  • The council is made up of representatives from religious/spiritual student groups, but we also invite all students to share their thoughts at our meetings and events.

Meetings:

We are in the process of working out when/where our regular meetings will be for Spring 2010. See our calendar for up-to-date information on IC sponsored activities and events. If you are interested in learning about our events and news, you may subscribe via email.

Mission:

  • The overall goal of IC is to promote religious diversity, educational exchange, and advocate for the religious and spiritual needs of students.
  • We hope to accomplish this goal through both social activities and educational events. We will create neutral environments and opportunities for diverse groups of people to come together in creating community and having conversations.

History:

The Interfaith Council was officially founded in November 2009 by a diverse group of students in response to discussions about the chapel in the Memorial Union. Many of the founders had been previously involved in interfaith activities and realized that there was a great need for a unifying body to bring together students of diverse faiths and no faith. Some of the founders had been previously involved in a now-inoperative group called FATE (Freethinkers Alliance for Tolerance and Ethics). The goal of FATE was to encourage friendships between people of diverse backgrounds, so it seemed natural to convert it into the Interfaith Council. FATE was founded by a small group of students in November 2008.

Inclusion Policy:

IC is open to students, faculty, and community members of all religious, philosophical, and ethical viewpoints. IC does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, or marital or family status. IC abides by all federal, state, city, and university laws and policies.
